The day that we went was New Year's Eve. At noon they were doing a "Noon Year's Eve" balloon drop. Everyone was so excited! After the balloon drop we went to the farm room. We stayed there for awhile. We climbed through tunnels, slid down slides, and drove pretend tractors. There was one tunnel no one was brave enough to explore (including me). Then we went to the Lego room! I was a blast! Jake built superhero forts, while Kate worked on spelling words. Maddie built a castle and I made the Iowa State logo. We also went to the Hospital room, Gravity room, and many more! Well, that was our trip to the Iowa Children's Museum.

Will Third Grade EVER End?

Flora is a new student at Poplar Elementary. Rowling. September and October was spent reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone. This book was a great book but I liked the second book better. My favorite part in this book is when Harry is still living with his aunt and uncle. Another part I really like is when Harry finds the mirror that shows Harry and his parents{James and Molly} standing together. I also really like the part in this book where Harry is on the Hogwarts Express. I think the part that is the funniest in this book is when Duddly falls into the boa constrictor's tank. Christmas is another of my favorite parts in the book,I like the part when Harry opens the invisibilty cloak. One last favorite part of this book are the Quidditch games.

Last night I was able to watch Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The movie was good for the most part. I found it scary at some parts but my dad and sister didn't. In the movie I especially like the Quidditch match where Harry's broomstick goes crazy. The funniest part in the movie is when Duddly falls into the boa constrictor's tank. The train in the movie is cool, too. If I would rate this movie 1 being the worst 10 being the best it would definitely be an 8 or 9.

Last night I lalso finished up Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. This book is my favorite Harry Potter book so far. Because I liked the entire book, I do not have one favorite part. One of my favorite parts in this book is when Ron, Fred, and George come to get Harry from the Dursley's. The magic floo powder is a favorite in this book too. The book heats up when the Chamber is opened on Halloween. But the Quidditch game is awfully good, too. The day the double attack happens I had no clue Hermione would be one of the two people turned to stone. The part that I like the most {maybe} is when Ron and Harry put the pieces together and find out the monster is a basilisk. They put the pieces together by visiting Hermione{stone}. When they are visiting Hermione they see that Hermione is holding onto a peice of paper, they take the paper from Hermione and find out... The saddest part in the book is when Ginny Ron's sister is brought into the chamber to die. Ron, Harry, and Lockhart go down in the chamber to rescue Ginny. If you want to figure out what happens I suggest to read the book.

I seem to be on a Harry Potter kick. Lego: Harry Potter Building the Magical World has given me a lot to look at and enjoy today. The buildings in this book help Harry Potter's world come to life.

Now, on to book three, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Creaky Old House

This week my mom got the book Creaky Old House by Linda Ashman. This book is a topsy-turvy tale of a real fixer-upper. I really thought this book was good. The illustrations are awesome, too. In this book 9 people and 1 dog live in old house. They all loved it just the way it was until the doorknob fell off and they couldn't find a nail to fit. So they went to get a new doorknob but that one was too big. Then they went to get a new door except the door was too big. In the end someone you wouldn't expect fixes the problem. I thought this was a great book and I'm glad my mom bought it.

Lots of Books

Wow! While I found more than three, I'm going to post about the three I enjoyed the most.

1. There was an Old Lady who Swallowed some Leaves by Lucille Colandro. This book my mom was reading to my sister a few nights ago and I joined in. In one verse she swallowed a shirt and in another verse swallowed some hay! I liked this book because it's always fun to see what the old lady swallowed.

2.Buster and the Giant Pumpkin by Marc Brown. Buster is the star of this book instead of Arthur! In this book Buster is going to Oregon to a pumpkin farm. Every other page of this book Buster sends a letter to someone back in Elwood City. I also learned some cool facts in this book like: From one giant pumpkin you can make more than 300 pumpkin pies! A giant pumpkin has 800 seeds in it! I like this book because it's cool book to see that pumpkins can really grow that big.

3. Very Short Scary Tales to Read Together by Mary Ann Hoberman is a You Read to Me, I'll Read to You book. I've only read through two of the stories in here but this book seems very creative! I'm hoping to read some more stories in this book later.

Babysitters Club

I'm still reading the BabySitters Club series by Ann M. Martin. Right now I'm in the middle of number #19. I've been going really fast on these books- the other night I almost read a whole book before bed. Next I'm going to read the first Super Special: Baby-Sitters on Board! My favorite book 7-19 was Stacy's Mistake. This book was really funny at the beginning. Stacy invites The Baby-Sitters Club to New York City to vist but not everyone likes the city. Dawn doesn't like hardly anything about the NYC, and Mary Anne's like a walking guide book because she's so excited. Kristy can't keep her mouth shut and Claudia is jealous of Stacy's friends. I also really liked Jessi's Secret Language where Jessi babysits for a deaf boy and his sister and learns sign language. There's a good suprise in this book, too. My goal by the end of the summer is to read 40 books. I have 30 books so far and still have a good amount of time left.

This post is being posted several weeks after Emileah wrote it because her editor/mother never got around to pre-reading this post. The Zhang family doesn't have very much money even though they work for Mr.Li (the richest man in Beijing.) They send their son, Ming, to trade eggs for some rice. An old man stops Ming and wants to trade the eggs for an old rusted wok. Ming says no way, but then the wok sings, " Boy, Boy trade for me, I am more than you can see!" So Ming traded. Wonderful story! It reminds us of how we should treat people. This week I couldn't decide betwen 2 books so I just did both.

1. 10 Things I can do to Help my World by Melanie Walsh. The cool part about this book is it's made up of 100% recycled material. I got this book when I was in 1st grade and my little sisters begged for my mom to read it to them every night. I read this book around Earth Day this year and got it out again the other night. I really like this book. It's very creative and the pictures are really good, too. There are good suggestions for how to help our earth.

2. Pictures from our Vacation by Lynne Rae Perkins is the second book. The illustrations for this book are wonderful. They show 2 maps in this book. The first map is a picture of how to get to the farmhouse where they are taking their vacation. The second map shows the lake which they never found on their own. When they finally got there it started to rain. I love this book. It is a great picture book that we have read a lot before bedtime.

The Baby-Sitters Club

I'm on a roll of reading. Right now I'm reading about 2 books a day, that means taking them to the pool also. The Baby-Sitters Club series by Ann M. Martin is what I have been devoting all my time to -I'll be starting the 7th book tonight. The books I've read so far are:

1. Kristy's Great Idea

2. Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls

3. The Truth About Stacy

4. Mary Anne Saves the Day

5. Dawn and the Impossible Three

6. Kristy's Big Day was probably my favorite book so far. These are my mom's books from when she was little and the first 5 pages were missing. Luckily my mom ordered another one from Amazon to replace this copy. I almost have all the Baby-Sitters Little Sister books by Ann M. Martin and I have all the The Baby-Sitters Club books, too. I won't run out of things to read for a while. I told my mom that if I read 25 of The Baby-Sitters Club books I will have read 40 books this summer which was my original goal.

Palace Beautiful

Palace Beautiful by Sarah Deford Williams might be my favorite book this year. At first I didn't read very much of this book, but then one night I read 150+ pages and then the next morning I finished it up. It was hard to put down. Sadie and Zuzu are sisters who lived in Texas. Now they have moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. Their mom died and their dad got married again. They like their step mom but are worried that something bad might happen to her like it did to their mom. In their new house they discover a journal hidden in the attic with their next door neighbor girl. Helen was the girl who wrote the journal in 1918. Back then World War I was taking place and so was the influenza epidemic. I wanted to keep reading to see if Helen was going to survive and stayed up way past my bedtime just to read the rest of Palace Beautiful.

Summer Vacation

We just got back from our family vacation to Colorado this summer. We went to the Royal Gorge Bridge, Olympic Training Center, Casa Bonita, and the Omaha Zoo. The books I read in the many hours we spent in the car were: How Tia Lola Came to Stay, Judy Moody Goes to Hollywood, and Dork Diaries (the 3rd book).

How Tia Lola Came to Visit Stay by Julia Alvarez is a book I really liked. They used a lot of Spanish in this book because there Tia Lola comes to visit from the Dominican Republic where they speak Spanish. Miguel and Juanita are siblings. Their parents just got divorced and they move to Vermont with there Mami. Their Papi still lives in New York when Miguel starts to like Tia Lola until she paints the house purple. Today at the library I got the second Tia Lola book and am looking forward to reading it.

I'm still reading the Dork Diaries by Rachel Renee Russell so iIll tell you more about that later.

Judy Moody Goes to Hollywood by Megan McDonald is abook that has a lot of interviews with the actors. I saw the movie Judy Moody and the Bummer Summer and I ilked this book because it has a lot of picturesof the movie. You can even get your own thrill points in this book just like Judy did in the movie. I have read all the Judy Moody books and was excited when the movie came out.

My Summer Reading Goal 40 books!

I have from May 24 until August 29 when school starts. If you're wondering why I have such a long summer, it is because we will have a new elementary building in the fall and the workers are getting a longer summer to keep working on construction.

Reading- Beginning of Summer

It's been awhile again so I'll tell you what I've been up to. I have been reading picture books for a week and a half and I have to tell you about this one: Charlie the Ranch Dog by Ree Drummond. My mom gave me this book to put in my book shelf, so I decided to read it before I put it away -the book was awesome. Charlie is a ranch dog and he has a friend Suzie who helps him. Suzie and Charlie are very different. Suzie dosen't have the paws, droopy eyes, the floppy skin, or the dangly ears. I really liked this book- it was funny and cute. I also got a puppy a few weeks ago so I am in the mood for puppy books. It helps that Sammy (my puppy) is the same kind of dog Charlie is.

My mom just finished reading The Watsons go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis. It was a good book. I liked the chapter were he falls in the whool pooh - known by most people as a whirl pool. The sad part of this book is when the church that his sister is in at the time gets bombed. This book was funny.

Right now I'm reading Piper Reed Campfire Girl by Kimberly Willis Holt. I started on Saturday and read five chapters on Saturday. I was only going to read four, but when Piper and her family got stopped by the police I just couldn't wait to see what happend, so I read another chapter. A new kid moves to town and is in Piper's class and has a brother in her younger sister's class and a brother in her older sister's class. Iv'e enjoyed this book so far and am hoping to finish it tonight or tomorow.

Another book I read recently is The Lemonade Crime by Jacqueline Davies. I read the first book and loved it. I read the last chapter of the first book over again to refresh my memory before I started this one.. In this book Jessie and her brother Evan think that Scott Spencer stole $208 from Evan's pocket. They think that because the one day when they were swimming Scott went in the house and came back out and had to leave suddenly. When Evan put his pants on there wasn't any money in his pocket. Jessie is so convinced about this she decides to have a trial to make Scott pay for his crime. Do you think that Scott stole the money?

Well... sorry I haven't posted in a while, but I'll tell you what I've been reading lately.

Two nights ago I fnished The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson. In this book there is a Christmas pageant put on by a group of kids at a church. The Herdmans are a bunch of naughty kids and decide to be in the pageant. The person that normally directs the pageant breaks her leg. A different mom directs the play. Even though the pageant isn't the same as other years, it is really funny which is why I liked the book.

I read Dork Diaries by Rachel Renee Russell, too. This book is like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, except in a girl version. has problems with switcing new schools and gets embarassed when her dad drops her off at school in his exterminator van with a bug on top. I just stared the second Dork Diaries by the same author. My mom said there is another Dork Diaries book coming out this fall that I am already waiting for.

The third book I am blogging about is Smile by Raina Telgemeier. This book is kind of like Dork Diaries, too, except this girl has problems with her teeth.

This year I didn't have spring break but on my mom's first day after school we went to get henna tattoos. Tomorow morning I have ice skating that starts at nine. It is starting to feel like spring.

Hank the Cowdog

A few weeks ago I got some Hank the Cowdog books by John R. I have started the second Hank the Cowdog book a few nights ago.

Christmas

A few nights ago I read a book to my little sister A Merry Little Christmas by Mary Engelbreit. The book is an A to Z book explaining things about Christmas. Like I is for ice skates and then it explains some more things. I really like this beause it goes in alphabetical order. My mom also found a cool Christmas website, http://www.northpole.com/. In this book Mrs. Claus answers and questions that kids ask about Santa. One of the questions is what Santa likes to eat best. Santa's favorite meal is macaroni -n- cheese. He also likes strawberries, but doesn't really care for vegetables. Mrs. Claus said that she and Santa do an hour of exercise every day in their gym. And, Santa's favorite kind of cookies are chocolate chip cookies. I had read it already a night before her. Everybody in Fancy Nancy's class is supposed to to bring in 100 of something for the 100th day of school. Fancy Nancy doesn't know what to bring and when she asks her teacher for help, her teacher told she can think of something. When she gets home she asks for help. Her mom tells her to make a picture out of macaroni. Then she asks her dad for help. He tells her to take 50 pairs of socks to school that would make 100 socks. Later that night her sister's goldfish dies. This is a wonderful book and you will have to check it out from the library to find out what Fancy Nancy brings to school to celebrate the 100th day.

Well I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while, so I'll tell you what I've been up to:

On Saturday it was finally sunny out so my dad and his friends shingled our roof. It was really loud. Also on Saturday it was Grump Days so we want to the parade. For Father's Day we painted pottery to give to my dad that we gave to him yesterday. We've gone to the pool a few times and we've had a few playdates. With my grandma we have baked some cupcakes from 2 books called Hello Cupcake and What's New Cupcake? Right now I'm reading The Far Side of the Loch which would be about Martha, Laura Ingalls Wilder's great grandma. I'm only on the 3rd chapter so I'll post about it later when I'm further in the book. Right now at night my mom is reading to me and my sister the book Summer of the Monkeys. In this book the boy, Jay Berry is trying to catch monkeys. At one point in time he caught two monkeys but they escaped. Jay Berry even got in a fight with the monkeys who bit him and pulled his hair out. The monkeys even got him drunk. The part he hates the most is when he gets sick and his sister practives being a nurse. Yesterday I finished reading Dewey the Libary Cat on the Kindle -it was a great book. I've been to the library a lot this summer. My little sister started gymnastics earlier this summer and tomorrow I have our summer reading program at the library and piano lessons. I better practice tonight.

jokes

WHAT DO HORSES USE TO OPEN GATES? DON-KEYS (LOL)

Sister Magic Mabel Strikes a Chord by Anne Mazer

Mabel loves to play piano. I've really enjoyed the book so far and I am planning to finish it tonight.

Book of the Week 2

The book of the week this week is Max Counts His Chickens by Rosemary Wells. In this book the Easter Bunny hid ten hot pink chicks. When Max's sister Ruby wakes up she says "finders keepers." Max and Ruby are both looking but Ruby spots all the eggs. Grandma comes in the room and says "oh dear" and makes a phone call. If you want to figure out who the Grandma calls, read Max Counts His Chickens. I like this book because it's fun seeing where Max and Ruby look and it is just in time for Easter.

Tillie Lays an Egg - My Book of the Week

Today I am starting a new thing - a book of the week. This week is the book Tillie Lays An Egg by Terry Golson. In this book there are 7 chickens and there are 3 chicken coops so the chickens take turns laying eggs. Tillie never lays eggs in the coop, instead wandering around the farm and the house. Each day Tillie finds an unusual place to lay her egg. I really like this book because I like to see all the places Tillie goes and I love the photographs.

Ice skating

Today was my first ice skating lesseons -I am in Basic 1. Sobol. Here are my favorite chapters: 1.The Case of the Headless Ghost There is a bully that lives in Encyclopedia's town named Bugs. Bugs is tricking all the kids that there is a headless ghost. Bugs is making kids pay a 10 cents to look in the window to see the ghost or pay 25 cents to go in and talk to the ghost.

2. The Case of the Disappearring Hundreds Encyclopedia and his helper Sally are spendingthe afternoon with Mr. O' Hara whoowns a drugstore. Earlier that morning Mr. O' Hara got 3 100 dollar bills from the bank. Somebody that works at the drugstore stole the money. Mr. O'Hara already asked them if they stole the money and all of them said no. Here are the other chapters in this book:

The Case of the Hollow Tree, The Case of the Stolen Moonstone, The Case of the Patriotic Volunteer, The Case of the Stolen Watch, The Case of the Gym Bag, The Case of the Supercomputer Brain, The Case of the Giggling Goldilocks, And The Case of Shoeless Sam. I liked this book because I liked to try to solve the case by myself. I figured out 3 of the chapters by myself. If you like to solve mysteries read Encyclopedia Brown Super Sleuth.

This is also a book I read for the Childrens Classic Mystery Challenge.

Miss Fannie's Hat

Last night I read Miss Fannie's Hat by Jan Karon. Miss Fannie is 99 and has a closet full of hats. I liked this book because I think it is cute and I like the part when Miss Fannie brings back memories of all her hats.

How Deep Is the Sea?

I just finished reading How Deep is the Sea by Anna Milbourne and Serena Riglietti. Pipkin is a penguin who is wondering how deep is the sea. His mom sends Pipkin down to see how deep the sea is. On the way Pipkin meets two predators. It is a very long book that I really liked. In this book Julia Gillian and her frined Bonwit have both told lies. Also their lunch room teacher breaks her leg, so they get a substitute lunch room teacher named Dumpling Man. All the kids in Julia Gillian's school don't like Dumpling Man. Julia Gillian and her friend Bonwit find out that Dumpling Man's real name is Vince Wintz. I really liked this book because I liked finding out more about Julia Gillian and her life since I read the first Julia Gillian book a while ago.

TV Moms

Right now I am reading TV Moms at bedtime. McKissack. This is something that really happened in 1960. Abby is a black person back in the time of segregation. My teacher explained that segregation means black people and white people could not eat at the same restaurants or go to the same schools, or drink in the same drinking fountains. The people in Abby's town are tired of being treated badly. They keep on having meetings on how to stop it. Finally they think of something. Part of the plan is that adults will sit in restaurants that only serve white people. The best part I liked about this book is that it is about a true event.

Two nights ago I read White House Q&A, a Smithsonian Book. To tell me just post a comment. My favorite Christmas book is The Puppy Who Wanted A Boy. In this story, a puppy named Petey wants a boy for Christmas more than anything. Petey asks almost every dog or puppy in the neighborhood if they want to give away their boy. Petey is cold and hungry but finds a home when he walks by a sign that reads Home for Boys. To find out what happens at the shelter read it for yourself. :)

Shiloh

We have been reading the Shiloh books by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor at bedtime.

2 things I like:

1. On the mantle in the big house there was a snow globe. In the snow globe lived a snow globe family. The snow globe family wished that that someone would shake up the family and make a blizzard. The only person to notice them anymore is the baby that lives with the big family in the house. To find out if the snow globe family gets their wish, read this book.

Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss

Today we have a guest blogger, Jacob, who is 3 1/2 so I am typing for him. So he gave his mom the valentine instead.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

In this funny book, Greg Heffley is always getting himself into big messes. In this book, Detective Reddy knocked on the door of Dink's house. He wanted to know if Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose knew anyone who videotaped the robbery of the bank. Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose searched all Halloween night but they had no luck. The next day when Dink went to Howard's barbershop, Howard told him that the boy who caught the robber on tape was noticed by the robber and ran to the barbershop to have Howard cut all of his hair off.
